New Life

I love that sexual intimacy brings new life.

The summer we had a drought the grass was crispy under foot.  Then, a good rain came along and the grass perked up.  After a few more good soakings, the lawn was a lush, verdant bed.

Sexual intimacy nourishes a marriage getting crispy from drought.  I wish I could explain in scientific terms how this happens.  Sure there’s lots of feel good chemicals getting released, but that’s not the complete answer to why sex makes a marriage lush and verdant.

Maybe one answer to why sexual intimacy brings life to a marriage is because sex is God’s glue.  You know that verse, cleave unto your wife (Genesis 2:24)?  The Hebrew word for Cleave has alternative meanings which includes sticking together like glue.

Chances are a marriage that is in conflict over sex has other problems.  Because, in my experience, sex really isn’t the core issue.  It’s just the issue the screams the loudest.  However, if you fix the lack of sex, it’s easier to fix the other issues.  Because, the spouse with the higher drive is finally feeling understood emotionally and satisfied physically.  They are no longer distracted by their screaming desire.

Now, the low-libido spouse shouldn’t be acting superior like they are doing the high drive spouse some big favor.  That attitude will not help in mending anything and will leave the whole situation worse.  Remember, no one likes being married to a martyr.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,” Philippians 2:3.

After calming down and meeting in the marriage bed, things aren’t dry and crispy anymore.  When things are brittle they tend to break.  When things are nourished well, they can bend in the wind.  This means you can work on other issues and make great progress.  Things can grow again, like attraction and friendship.  I love that sexual intimacy can restore life to a marriage.

The grass looks greener on the other side.  But, yours would be just as green if you water it.

I love sexual intimacy also creates literal life, babies.

This is another mysterious element God endowed sexual intimacy.  He gave our bodies the ability to create life.

My faith in the creator was solidified during my embryology class at Purdue.  The process of two cells melding into a living being requires immense precision.  It’s a dance with exact steps.  A must happen before B and B must happen before C.  How could this be random?

Today, I stand in humbled awe of this miracle.  Because yesterday, God gifted the Burns family with our very first grandchild.  After raising three sons, we have a granddaughter.  Please, celebrate with me and pray with me for the grace of God to rest upon her.
