Puerta Rican grandmothers are right about a lot of things but not Vicks VapoRub.  It’s time I to dispel the myth the elder generation in certain ethnic communities promote.  Vicks VapoRub is not a universal miracle cure and it does not increase your sex drive!

“Does Vicks VapoRub Enhance Sex Drive?” was a search term that recently landed someone on OysterBed7.  First off, I’m sorry if you are sick.  You must be bored and a bit creative (and maybe a little ‘in the mood’) to think to correlate sex with Vicks.

If you are going to use Vicks AS DIRECTED, I don’t know if it will enhance your sex drive or not.  The three main ingredient in Vicks are camphor, eucalyptus oil, and menthol.   According to this Livestrong article, these three things have many health benefits and some potential for toxicity.

However, if you plan on oiling up your genitals with this pungeant vasoline, I want you to consider a few things.

Topical application of Vicks on your most delicate tissues will absolutely, positively NOT help your sexual experience!  Vicks VapoRub will not enhance your sex drive.  It will do the opposite.

Camphor, Eucalyptus Oil, Menthol

The tingly cooling effect of the three main ingredients might lead you to believe they will ramp up pleasure.  In reality, the opposite will happen.  Overall, this trio will KILL sexual arousal.  They desensitize any area where applied.

Camphor Desensitizes

Camphor’s pathway, the way it works, is not quite known.  You may have experienced camphor’s ability to dull pain and irritation.  Doesn’t it make sense that if it dulls pain, it probably dulls nerve sensitivity in general?  Yes, it kills all kinds of sensitivity, even pleasure.  It may kill your already low sex drive.

Camphor and Eucalyptus are oily-cousins that are produced from trees in the same family (Myrtaceae).  Both have similar chemical components.  Eucalyptus is an anti-inflammatory.  It shrinks blood vessels so swelling is reduced.  Blood flow and swelling is necessary for sexual arousal.

The third ingredient in the Vick’s trio is menthol.  Menthol is a synthetic compound that has opioid qualities.  Opioids are an anaphrodisiac (anti-aphrodisiac).  I talked about them here.

Here is an Overview of the Lesser (Inactive) Ingredients in Vicks

Cedarleaf oil is antibacterial/fungicide.  It was used in Egyptian embalming.

Nutmeg oil is another cousin of camphor and eucalyptus (desensitizing).

Special petrolatum is like vasoline.

Thymol is related to the anesthetic Michael Jackson overdosed on, propofol (again, desensitizing).

The last one on the list is turpentine oil.  Yes, the same as paint thinner.  It has ancient history medicinally as an antiseptic and diuretic.  A diuretic rids your body of water.  In other words, it takes out the moisture.  You need moisture for your soft tissues to be pliable and lubricated.

Although Vicks may seem a reasonable alternative to the warming lubricants in the intimate aisle at Wal-Mart, it’s not.  Keep it far away from your ‘fun zone.’

FINAL THOUGHTS

Outside of the box thinking can lead to innovative answers.  Unfortunately, Vicks VapoRub is a fail when it comes to helping you perk up your low sex drive.  Even though this avenue isn’t going to ramp up sex drive, something else might.  Keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking!!

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly,” Robert F. Kennedy.

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones,” Proverbs 17:22.

Addendum about premature ejaculation

My husband, the pharmacist, reminded me that if a man is suffering from premature ejaculation (PE), he might be searching for ways to extend his (and her) pleasure.   Since Vicks deadens sensations, it might be rumored to be a folk remedy for PE.  A man researching PE could use the information I’ve listed above as a starting point while proceeding with a great deal of caution.  Here’s a good resource to continue the PE search:  Male Sexual Health News via The Generous Husband.

However, Vicks would not be good for the delicate tissues inside the vagina.  Please be aware!!  If you apply Vick’s on the tip of the penis, allow the sensations to subside, then thoroughly clean the area before inserting into the vagina.  OR, use a condom so that the Vick’s does not come into contact with your wife’s delicate tissue.  Be thoughtful about your wife and not just after the ability to last longer.
